• 6 panel screen formed into 3 walls
  • 56″ H x 35 W x 35.5 D
• antique foot stool probably around a foot tall for sitting
• 1 x 6 x 8ft wood planks; 4 of them each cut in roughly half [lengths: 2 x 34.5″ and 2 36″]
  • won’t be using one of them, so as to access the top ‘box’ area where the laptop will be
• 2 x 36″ square plywood sheets [or particle board — something strong but light and wont be seen]
  • must cut central hole in one sheet — 2″ diameter
• wood glue and small nails
• 4 x 1 in. pipes cut to 60″  length
• 8 x 1 in. wide flanges for the pipe tops and bottom
• 32 x screws for the flange holes — may only use 16 of them and not attach to anything on the floor, but should get them anyway
• flanges, screws, and pvc dowel [35″ long] for the front curtain rod
• black blackout fabric for front curtain and velcro strips 56″ long x 2 for the sides to keep it closed
• fabric to cover inside and/or outside panels
• paint for the wood crown section at the top — black?
• wood trim and/or wood detail pieces for decorating crown
• rubber strips with adhesive on one side to put along the 3 bottom sides to help it not slip on the floor [9ft]
• 4 rubber grip pieces to put under the 4 flanges at the bottom, again to stop slippage on the floor
• possibly carpet piece to dampen sound and complete the look in the box

  • you will not feel watched as you view/interact/react
• Non-technological feel
  • While games and 3D are common experiences, VR is still novel, so creating an atmosphere that does not reinforce that is important to me
  • Suggestive of a tent, cabinet — wood materials, hand painted/crafted
  • May build a ‘headset’ outfit for the Oculus HMD — like a veil? fur hat? cover wires but be sure to cut out area for the sensor and glue around it so it is kept clear
• Space for only one, but not claustrophobic feeling
  • a 3 foot square area with 5.5 feet of height should accommodate most individuals on the small stool
• Computer out of sight but accessible
  • top mounted laptop hopefully
  • cord to HMD comes through center hole above stool
  • power cables run out back of crown area and will not be seen since this goes in a corner or along a wall
• Darkness, exterior deprivation
  • 3 sides will have a full ‘wall’ and one or two will even be against another exterior wall which should help prevent light and sound leaks
  • the top will 2 layers of wood so should be light and sound resistant — can put insulation in there for more sound-proofing
  • the front opening will have some wood over-hang at the top top to duck below and help light pollution for the eye area
  • the front curtain coverage will be made of blackout material and affixed semi-permanently on one side with a full strip of velcro and should be 4 inches longer than height of cabinet to pool on floor and prevent light leakage
  • the other side of the front curtain can be affixed with velcro if desired, and the curtain will be wider than the opening allowing for full coverage
  • the bottom 3 strips that attach to the floor will have a rubber door strip along them to stop slippage as well as to act as a barrier to light and sound for imperfect floors during installation
  • a carpet cut to size may be added to the space to provide comfort if people wish to sit on the floor rather than a stool — I may prefer this setup — and will provide further sound absorption
• Exterior design should indicate something traditional yet not placeable — something familiar but simultaneously foreign
  • not sure of the design yet until after the build since size and use will help inspire the necessary look for the concept
