Headdresses serve as a fast, visual, beacon or marker of both status and role. Examples: headdresses for various daily use by strata of society in a Russian village — the lord wears one type, the lady another, the peasant farmer one, the peasant wife another, the milkmaid her own, and the priest yet another. Even children might be required to wear a unique form. Other examples include the various levels of religious leaders from a multitude of religions from every continent. Here again the headdresses speak of a relationship from one of them to another, as well as the relationship they share under a particular religion, and even their general relationship to a higher power. Some headdresses are practical, from bonnets to cowboy hats to helmets. Others are ceremonial. Some use elaborate materials, are artistically designed, and may cost quite a large sum, often to indicate a superior power position and/or role as leader or ‘one’s better.’ While others stand out in contrast, such as a striped kerchief used to indicate the status of slave and role as cook. And yet, for some, the lack of a headdress, no matter how lowly one’s station, would still indicate the ultimate depravity. And for some societies, wearing one in God’s space is considered inappropriate, as role and status would not be indicated to Him, while for others, the reverse is true and it shows supplication and awareness of one’s own station below God. Headdresses are of course just as closely linked to sex as they are to religion. A beautiful maiden, a gorgeous headdress. Such headdresses can be elaborate or simple, hand-made or expensive. They can be made of shells or jewels, for instance. The point is always the same though, act as a beacon regarding the status, role, availability, and desirability of a potential mate. With so many functions, across every culture and throughout a large expanse of time, headdresses stand out as both extensions of yourself to others (communications in a coded language) but also as visual beacons to anyone and everyone. And there are even some ‘universals’ such as elaborateness, expense, or recognizable shape/size which help to guide us in reading them when the related culture is not our own and at times, neither is the language. On the other hand, there still exists a great amount of arcane regarding most headdresses which prove unfamiliar to us. This is visual reading is perhaps my strongest interest in regards to my use of headdresses in my art.

[5

post-180","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research
["GET
